By the time the league ended in 1954, over one million fans had paid to see AAGPBL games! The Major Leagues Move West In the late 1950s, a lot of Americans wanted to escape the hustle and bustle of the big cities like New York and Boston. So, they started to move out West. In 1957, it was clear that New York could no longer support three baseball teams at the same time. As attendance began to go down, the teams began to leave. In 1958, the Brooklyn Dodgers moved to Los Angeles. For the first time since 1884, professional baseball would not be played in Brooklyn. The New York Giants joined the Dodgers in moving to California and settled in San Francisco. Hank Aaron: Home Run King Henry Louis Aaron was a quiet, mild-mannered young man who could hit a baseball very hard and very far. He was signed by the Boston Braves in 1952. He stayed with the team even after they moved to Milwaukee and later to Atlanta. He ended up being one of the best home run hitters in baseball history. Aaron hit 755 home runs in his career, passing Babe Ruth and holding the all-time record until Barry Bonds broke it in 2007. Read more
