In Burning Ground, the protagonist (Graham Davidson) is a time traveler who finds himself transported back in time one hundred years to the Yellowstone wilderness in 1871. Graham joins the Hayden Survey team, which was commissoned to explore and map the region. He is faced with numerous wilderness perils. He is confronted by an egotistical cavalry lieutenant during his journey. But he also falls in love with Makawee, a Crow Indian who serves as a guide. This map shows the actual route of the Hayden Survey in red. The blue arrows indicate the path Graham took with Makawee and Rides Alone (a Crow warrior) when they left the Hayden team, which had spent 38 days in Yellowstone. Their goal was to reach the Dragon's Mouth Spring by the next full moon, so Graham could attempt to return to his own time. But he is conflicted. Can he leave the woman he loves behind? Read more " " Dragon's Mouth Spring This geothermal feature is located north of Yellowstone Lake and south of the Canyon area, adjacent to the Mud Volcano. It is considered a sacred site for the Kiowa and Crow Indians. It is also where Graham's time travel journey began, when he petitioned the spirits under a full moon. Annie - Yellowstone Lake In this photo by William H Jackson, the expedition survey manager James Stevenson and Chester Dawes sit in Annie. The crude boat with a horse blanket for a sail was the first to ply the waters of Yellowstone Lake. They explored the northernmost island, which was named in honor of the man holding the oars in the photo. Grand Prismatic Spring This hot spring in Midway Geyser Basin is the most photographed thermal feature in Yellowstone because of its size and vibrant colors. Thomas Moran made a watercolor sketch of this spring. Graham observed the soon-to-be-famous artist while he captured the scene in a watercolor, which he later reproduced in finer detail in his studio. Castle Geyser This photograph of Castle Geyser crater was taken by William H Jackson in 1871. It erupts about every 14 hours and lasts twenty minutes. The Crested Pool is in the foreground. In the novel, Graham assisted Jackson in setting up to take this photo and learned about wet plate photography. Read more " " West Thumb Hot Springs Graham gradually spent more time with Makawee, who served as a guide. When the pack train reached the West Thumb Geyser Basin, she encouraged him to strip and bathe with her in the warm springs which lay under the lake near the shoreline. This scene presaged a more intimate relationship that would develop between the baashchiile (white man) and the beautiful Crow woman. Yellowstone Panorama In the novel, Graham accompanied a small group which ascended Avalanche Peak, on the eastern boundary of the park in the Absaroka Range. They enjoyed a spectacular view of Yellowstone Lake, as well as the Teton Range fifty miles distant. This panoramic scene was painted by Heinrich C. Berann in 1991. Grizzly in Pelican Valley Rides Alone was field dressing a slain bison in the Pelican Valley. While Graham was watering the horses nearby, a sow grizzly attacked the Crow warrior. It was a terrifying experience for Graham, who had limited experience firing his cavalry-issued Spencer carbine. Would he be able to save his colleague? Norris Geyser Basin While gathering volcanic rocks, Makawee, Rides Alone, and Graham were captured by hostile Piegan Blackfeet at Obsidian Cliff. They were taken to Norris Geyser Basin. Graham was accused of being one of the soldiers who participated in a massacre of innoncent Piegans on the Marias River a year earlier (see Gustavus Doane below). He was ordered to run through the active basin or be shot! Read more 1871 x Ferdinand Hayden Congress commissioned an expedition to explore the Yellowstone region in 1871. Thirty-five men were led by Ferdinand Hayden of the US Geological Survey. The party relied upon a large military escort to guard against hostile Indians, and this group of men from the Second Cavalry nearly doubled the size of the expedition. William H Jackson William Henry Jackson was twenty-seven years old when he was invited to be the official photographer for Ferdinand Haydens series of expeditions. Jacksons photographs helped persuade Congress to vote for the Yellowstone National Park Protection Act in 1872. Thomas Moran Thomas Moran accompanied Haydens geological survey of Yellowstone as a guest artist with funding from Scribners and Northern Pacific Railway financier Jay Cooke. (The official artist for the expedition was Henry Wood Elliott.) Morans watercolor sketches of the Yellowstone landscape were the first color images of this region. Lt. Gustavus Doane Gustavus Doane actively participated in Marias Massacre of 1870. He took over leadership of the military escort halfway through the 1871 expedition. Later in his career, Doane became resentful of the accolades bestowed on Hayden. He believed his achievements as an early explorer of the region were never recognized. Read more
