By the time Franklin joined Congress, he was pushing seventy, and was notorious for napping during meetings. After history buff Arthur J. Funk claimed to have found Gwinnetts grave in Savannah in the 50s, the bones were sent to the Smithsonian for examination. The cities of Augusta and Savannah each demanded the remains for their Declaration signers memorials, but eventually Savannah won out and Gwinnett was reburied in the original cemetery in the 60s.
